The International Immersion Programme in PGP is designed to provide students with insights into the economic, social and cultural spheres of emerging economies. As a part of the ‘Business Planning and International Markets’ elective course in the second year of the programme, students attend lectures with specific focus on business and industry. In addition, during their study visit to China/Japan, they familiarize themselves with local challenges and opportunities. Students get the chance to choose the country. The visit will be organized during the Term Break for seven days in September 2016. It is fully funded by the institute. This visit also includes interaction with academia and industry, visit to historical sites and other academics-related activities. After returning from the visit, each student is required to submit a report and make presentation on key learnings.
Visit to China by IIM Visakhapatnam students
As part of the Business Planning for International Markets (BPIM) course, students of the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) 2015-17 of IIM Visakhapatnam visited China during their fifth term under the guidance and mentorship of Prof Debraj Ghoshal. The students shared that their visits to factories of Lenovo, Volkswagen, Coca-Cola and Bao Steel were quite eventful and exciting. It proved to be a great opportunity for students to acquire first-hand experience/knowledge on China in terms of its economy, functioning of state-controlled enterprises, the way policies are framed and implemented, work culture and finally the cultural similarities and differences between India and China. The factory visits and interaction with business leaders spanning banking, automobile and service sectors gave the students an opportunity to witness various concepts which are part of the curriculum of their courses. Few concepts like Kanban card systems at the Volkswagen plant, as well as product-process layout combinations at the Lenovo plant gave practical ground to the theories studied. In addition to this, the presentations shown at the companies gave the students an insight into what it takes to operate a business and succeed in a country like China.
Overall, the China visit, in addition to being informative and presenting life-size models of concepts taught in classes, was also an opportunity to check whether some of the conceptions the students had about China were truths or just myths.
Visit to Japan by IIM Visakhapatnam students
Visiting Japan as part of the Business Planning for International Markets (BPIM) course during the fifth term made the IIM Visakhapatnam students experience the technological advancements in Japan. The faculty including Prof. P D Jose, Prof N. Ravi and the former Ambassador of India in Japan guided the group of students who visited Japan.
The students visited the Indian Embassy in Japan, Tokyo Stock Exchange, Daishin Seiki, METI, NEDO and many other places of business and cultural importance.
Visits to Daishin Seiki and DMG Mori, exposed how technology drives manufacturing processes in Japan. The kickstarter to the course came from the Ambassador addressing the students on trade relations between India and Japan and the role that the students could play as future managers in strengthening the existing ties. The discussions which followed at METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) emphasized the challenges faced in this context. Japanese cutting-edge research was shown through the visits to Twins Medical University and NEDO where alternate energy ways were developed for a sustainable future. Functioning of the historic Tokyo Stock Exchange and Chamber of Commerce, Japan were stimulating to the students. The moment of awe came when students visited the Japanese Railways East HQ. Understanding the background operations and the technology behind the bullet train helped them understand the challenges that the company might face while implementing the first bullet train project in India, between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Students also experienced the Japanese culture and architecture through visits to the Sensoji Temple, the Skytree and the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Travelling by the busy Tokyo metro and tasting the traditional Japanese cuisine, ‘Tempura’ were the icing on the cake.
